This is why I’m not a fancy undies type of girl…

In the latest #23til23 challenge, the lovely brains behind DeadCowGirl challenged me to add fanciness to my underwear drawer.

I’m more of a solid cotton underwear type of girl.

I was terrified to go to a Victoria’s Secret on my own, and I needed to pick up a pair of fake nails for going out tonight, so yesterday I decided to buy a pair of cheap, fancy underwear and a matching bra. I went to Walmart.

This probably should’ve been a sign of things to come.

I quickly sifted through the bras, looking for ones I wouldn’t be too embarrassed to be wearing if I was in a car accident, knocked unconscious, and the doctors and nurses at the hospital had to put me in a hospital gown. (Because this is logical thinking, people.) After I accomplished Mona’s challenge (well, sort of. I didn’t get fitted for a new bra but whatever. It’s still my size.), I found my fake nails and headed to the checkout lines… Where I was left floored.

Every single cashier was either a sweet-looking old lady or a sketchy looking old man.

I was buying a fancy bra/ undies set and fake nails.

At Walmart.

On sale.

That’s probably the trashiest scenario ever, and I probably didn’t look like I was a wholesome girl.

I probably looked like I was Julia Roberts in “Pretty Woman” before Richard Gere swept her off of her feet and changed her life forever.

It also didn’t help that I was wearing a shorter dress and boots on one of the coldest days EVER.

I felt like a slut.

I seriously panicked. I thought about buying a sweatshirt or a snuggie or SOMETHING, ANYTHING to go with my trashy purchases so I wouldn’t have little old ladies or sketchy old men thinking I was a prostitute.

Then I noticed a cashier who was in her 20’s and looked like she was pissed off that she was working at Walmart.

I got on her line, and suddenly I heard a voice say, “Kailynn!”

Well, crap.

It was a friend of one of my former residents who unofficially became my resident. He knew me as a professional, mature, chick-in-charge sort of person. Our conversation went like this.

Him: Kailynn!
Me: Hey! How are you? (trying to fold up bra and hide it on register)
Him: Good, you?
Me: Good, good…
Him: So what are you buying?
Me: (without missing a beat) A lacy bra, some underwear, and fake nails.
Him: Uhhh… I gotta go. (quickly leaves)
Cashier (starts laughing hysterically for 5 minutes)

And that, folks, is why I prefer tighty whities and bras I bought in high school during a back to school sale at Kohl’s.

Thanks for the challenge, Mona!

The official #23til23 countdown wraps up tonight at midnight, but I’ve decided to make #23til23 something I participate in all year long. Send your challenges my way, people, and be sure to take a shot of tequila or rum for me tonight at midnight EST. 😉

Sometimes you need to splurge a little…

It’s my birthday week, which means I’m justifying every unnecessary purchase I make by saying, “It’s okay, it’s a birthday present for myself!” Basically this means I’m blowing what’s left of my Christmas money on me, and counting the days til I get paid again! (That’s the downside to working for a university– no pay days over Winter Break!)

Today was my first day back to class after student teaching all last semester. It was odd, surreal, and kind of a mind fuck to be a student again. While I really enjoyed my classes today, I just want to graduate and be in charge of my own classroom again. These next few months can’t go quick enough.

My first class (“The Teaching Professional”) was actually sort of a nice blast to the past. My professor was actually a man who taught a class I took my junior year of high school. Dr. C is an extremely intelligent, eloquent man. His classes were always filled with life lessons, which wasn’t something I always appreciated as a 16 year old. Having him as my teacher again is sort of like having Mr. Feeney as my professor. I feel like I’ve come full circle since high school, and it was really nice to reunite with Dr. C. He gave me a hug at the start of class and expressed his excitement that I’m his student again. I love that man, and I can’t wait to hear what bits of knowledge he has to bestow upon our class in preparation for our entrance to the teaching world.

After Dr. C’s class I had about 4 hours to kill before my next class. (!!!) Two of my friends from my Cohort and I grabbed a nice, delicious, healthy Kosher/ vegetarian lunch.

The following conversation ensued:

Friend 1: “I always wanted to be a vegetarian.”
Me: “I wanted to too but I couldn’t give up my chicken.”
Friend 2: “I wanted to date Johnny Depp. Are we talking about lost dreams?”

That pretty much sums up my friendships.

Then we went to the new University bookstore, which is FUCKING GORGEOUS.

There’s a giant clock on the outside, which you can look through. It’s pretty cool.

You know what else was cool about the new bookstore?

The $1 clearance area.

2013-01-23 14.54.17

All the books on clearance seemed to be books professors had ordered for classes that were no longer offered. I ended up buying over $150 worth of books for $5.

Then I discovered an “Odd, Curious, Cool” section… and my life was made.

Yes, that is Goodnight iPad… and the newest addition to my growing collection of children’s books.

It’s possibly one of my favorite things ever.

I’m probably going to be returning to this section of Barnes & Noble to shop for birthday gifts for the next few months…enjoy.

I hit the jackpot today, people.

I’m still a wannabe 1950’s housewife.

Yesterday was a really wonderful day. I cooked not one but TWO meals! I love cooking, as evidenced by my experiences during Hurricane Sandy, and it only seemed fitting that “cook a meal for a friend” was a #23til23 challenge.

My mom gave me my brother’s crock pot the other day, as he’s finished with school and living at home again. I tried it out and made a squash-pine nut-pepper-onion-cheese recipe and it turned out pretty well.

First, I had my friend over for lunch. He’s moving to Florida next week and I’m pretty devastated. It was really nice to sit back, relax, and show my appreciation for him with food. I really love cooking for others.

Then, after work, I made V dinner for the first time… and it was a success! I felt all fancy-schmancy playing hostess, and it felt really great to be taking care of someone who has taken such good care of me.

Plus, she bought me this cupcake from Crumbs. It’s a s’mores cupcake. I’ve yet to try it, but I’ll probably want to marry it when I do. I snagged a small sampling of the chocolate chips on it and they were Heavenly… I’m really looking forward to trying this bit of cupcake Heaven!

Update: Writing this post motivated me to eat the cupcake. HOLYCRAP. There’s a marshmallowy filling and I’m in love with it.

I totally love cooking for others. Please let me know if you want me to cook for you…as long as you’re willing to come to me. I charge extra for delivery.

Happy cooking, folks!

Oh, and this is my drawing of myself. I’m in love with a cupcake. Sorry, V. You have chocolatey competition.
