I don’t give up items for Lent for religious reasons. I started giving up things in high school as a challenge amongst friends, just to see if I could do it. Since then, I’ve successfully given up things and dominated that challenge every year. In the past, I’ve given up rum, cheese fries from the dining hall, and chocolate chip cookies to name a few.
My key to success with Lent has always been to give up something realistic. I’ve always stuck in the line of thought that I’m not going to give up something I actually am addicted to. I’ll give up things I love, but not things I can’t live without.
This year, I gave up iced lattes from Dunkin Donuts.
I lasted approximately 1 week and 1 day.
Iced caramel lattes from Dunkin are my downfall. Seriously. The fact that I managed to go EIGHT WHOLE DAYS without one is miraculous. The combination of ice, whipped cream, caramel, and caffeine sends me into a state of bliss and serenity that I can barely begin to describe. I don’t get one every day, but I get one at least once or twice a week. I knew it would be tough, but I didn’t anticipate how tough.
I cracked on Friday morning.
After 4 hours of sleep, it became obvious to me that I *needed* caffeine in order to function at a very important job fair that morning. Regular coffee wasn’t going to cut it so I stopped at Dunkin and broke Lent. I got a large iced caramel latte, and you know what?
I killed it at the career fair.
I think Jesus will forgive me.
