NaBloPoMo 2012: November 4th- Sandy set me back about 50 years

So this past week Hurricane Sandy hit the East Coast. Like any good worry-wart, I was fairly stocked up on batteries, tissues, water, tylenol, booze, and baking supplies.

Now, the last one would make perfect sense if it weren’t for the fact that I have an electric oven.

So, on Monday night, in the hours before Sandy was supposed to hit, I was cooking mashed potatoes, mac & cheese, and hurricane cookies.

Yes. Hurricane cookies.

I mixed up some sugar cookie batter and added blue food coloring to it. While the cookies baked, I decided they needed icing so I made homemade icing which I anticipated looking like a fluffy white vanilla. It didn’t. So, after everything cooled, I iced half of the cookies and then used food coloring gel to draw hurricanes on the cookies. (At this point, the storm hadn’t hit and I was trying to soothe my nerves by baking.)

Then, immediately after I finished baking, I lost power. Womp womp.

When I gained power back two days later, I realized it was dangerous to drive to the store, and that the store would probably be empty. My family came over to use my electricity and stay warm, and I was devastated that I couldn’t celebrate Halloween. I then baked pumpkin bread.

The next day, I was really craving chocolate. However, I didn’t have chocolate. At all. So I decided to bake some sort of sugary treat. I looked up a bunch of recipes (Yay internet access!) and settled on making peanut butter fudge.

Mmmmmm. Tasty.

The finished peanut butter fudge product was DELICIOUS. Seriously.

After the fudge, I took a day off. I was sick and needed some beauty rest.

Then I woke up around 6:30pm and decided I wanted quiche. I had a bunch of leftover veggies from veggies & dip, and a bunch of eggs, but I was lacking a quiche pan. I found a quiche casserole recipe online, tweaked it, and by 10pm I was eating quiche for dinner. (Nobody ever warns you how long it takes to chop baby carrots. Ugh.)

Seriously. This was AWESOME if I do say so myself.

I became very reflective over the Week of Sandy, and I realized that that biotch of a hurricane turned me into a 1950’s housewife…minus the “wife” part…and I guess minus the “house” part as well since I live in a studio apartment. Let’s rephrase this: Sandy turned me into a homemaker.

I totally dress like this during all hurricanes. Don’t you? (This is from a “TV party” my freshman year of college. I was Lucile Ball.)

Sandy made me very grateful to have my health, a roof over my head, and the love and support of my family in everything I do. (I’m also really glad they’re all okay!) Sandy also made me realize how much I love cooking, and how awesome it is to play the role of Susie Homemaker once in awhile. Maybe I’m meant to be a 1950’s housewife afterall…
