420 is overrated.
(I know, I know, I’m about to get a lot of arguments here.)
Every year, on this “holiday,” my Facebook newsfeed fills up with people complaining about people celebrating the coveted day devoted to pot.
Now, I have a serious confession to make.
I need to put this out there.
I need to come out of the closet.
I’ve never smoked pot.
For some reason, there are three assumptions that I have always been told people assume about me:
- I’m Jewish.
- I date black guys.
- I smoke pot.
While there’s nothing wrong with any of these, I’ve never understood why people have thought these things about me. I’m a Lutheran lesbian woman. I occasionally smoke cigarettes if I’m extremely intoxicated or upset, but that’s it.
As a Resident Assistant at my university, I’ve enjoyed using university money to celebrate Pot Day. For the past few years, I’ve used my budget to buy a ton of pot(s) and have a flower pot decorating/ flower plant decorating program. It’s always a successful program, but it was especially successful this year. I didn’t actually have it on 4/20 this year (nobody would come to a program on a Friday!) but I had it on Earth Day.
The backseat of my car was filled with pots on 4/20.
I did, however, get threatened by University police officers on 4/20. I was trying to unload all 60 pounds of pot(s) I had in my car into my building, and an officer told me I had to move. (I always put my hazards on and unload my car where it was located.) I told him I just needed 5 minutes to unload everything, then I’d move it immediately. His response? “That’s WAY too long. If you do that, I’m having you towed.” Luckily, my friends were there to help me unload all of the pots into my staff office. You’d think the officers would have something better to do on 4/20….
The prettiest my backseat ever looked (or smelled)
4/20 wasn’t a crazy rager of a day in my building. If it was, people were quiet about it. Maybe it’s because I’m still a 420 virgin, but I don’t see the excitement in celebrating the day with anything but flower pot decorating and flower planting. That’s a hell of a lot more fun to me.
